Armistice Jewels at Westminster Abbey

The British royals wrapped up their commemorations of the centenary of the World War I armistice on Sunday with one more event: a service at Westminster Abbey. The location was especially fitting, as the Abbey houses the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, an unidentified soldier who perished on a European battlefield during the First World War.

The Queen was joined by the President and First Lady of Germany for the service, demonstrating the friendship that now exists between the former foes.

The Queen wore her usual pearl earrings and necklace for the service. She secured her poppies with the Jardine Star Brooch, which you can learn about here.

The Duchess of Cornwall also wore pearls, including her favorite pearl drop earrings and her pearl choker necklace with the gem-set clasp in shades of purple. (More on that necklace here!) She also added a poppy brooch to her ensemble.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were also present at the Abbey for the service.

Kate wore the same jewels she’d worn earlier for the commemorations at the Cenotaph: her pearl cluster earrings and poppy pin.

Meghan kept her jewels extremely simple, wearing only a tiny pair of stud earrings.
One more woman from the royal family was in attendance for the service: the Duchess of Gloucester, who appears to have worn the badge of one of her regiments.

This morning, the British royal family gathered in London for the annual memorial at the Cenotaph honoring fallen members of the military. This year’s commemorations were held exactly a century after the end of the First World War, adding an extra touch of poignancy to the moving memorial.

The Queen no longer lays her own tribute wreath at the Cenotaph — instead, she’s passed that role along to the Prince of Wales. Just as she did last year, she watched this morning’s memorial from a balcony. The Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge joined her.

To secure her poppies for the memorial, the Queen chose the Courtauld Thomson Scallop-Shell Brooch, a legacy from her late mother. Jewels connected to the late Queen Mother are always especially sentimental for events related to World War I, as she lost a beloved brother in the conflict.

The Duchess of Cornwall also remembered a beloved family member with her jewels. She honored her father, the late Major Bruce Shand, by wearing the badge of his regiment, the 12th Royal Lancers, to secure her poppies. She also wore her favorite pearl drop earrings and her pearl choker necklace with the large diamond clasp.

The Duchess of Cambridge once again wore the pearl cluster earrings she debuted at the christening of Prince Louis in July, as well as a poppy pin.

For her first Remembrance Sunday appearance, the Duchess of Sussex wore tiny clover-shaped stud earrings from Vanessa Tugendhaft. Appropriately, she appears to have chosen to wear a red California poppy for the event. (The symbol of her home state was also one of the flowers embroidered on her wedding veil.)

The Princess Royal was in uniform to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph; you’ll catch a glimpse of her here behind the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent.

The Countess of Wessex was elegant in simple drop earrings from Heavenly Necklaces, a poppy pin, and the cap badge of The Rifles (Sophie is the Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion).
