Our Nobel jewelry-palooza rolls on with a look at the sparkling jewels worn by Princess Sofia in Stockholm!

Just like her mother-in-law, Princess Sofia chose to wear the same tiara that she wore for the Nobels last year: the pearl setting of her Diamond Palmette Tiara. (See last year’s appearance here!)

The tiara is a reworked version of her wedding tiara, which was itself a remodeled emerald and diamond necklace from Queen Silvia’s collection. (Learn more about it here!)

Sofia echoed the tiara’s upright pearls by wearing diamond and pearl drop earrings.

And, dramatically, she chose to wear a large seed pearl and diamond choker necklace.

Sofia’s necklace is similar to — but not the same as — one often worn a decade or so ago by Princess Madeleine. (Above, she’s wearing it for the Nobels in 2002.) You’ll note that Madeleine’s choker necklace has fewer rows of seed pearls and larger, more widely space diamond sections. The choker Madeleine wore has significant royal provenance: it belonged to Queen Victoria of Sweden. (It’s certainly possible that Sofia’s also has a royal pedigree — this style of necklace was very popular at the beginning of the twentieth century, and there were a lot of them in royal jewelry boxes.)

Anyway, back to Sofia’s jewelry — she secured the sash of the Order of the Seraphim with this lovely diamond and pearl brooch.

Victoria chose a sentimental family sparkler, the Connaught Diamond Tiara, for the ceremony. We last saw her wear this tiara for the Nobels in 2015, when she paired it with pieces from the amethyst parure. (See it here!)

The family often calls the piece “Princess Sibylla’s Tiara,” because it was a favorite tiara of Victoria’s grandmother, Princess Sibylla of Sweden. It originally belonged to her great-grandmother, the British-born Princess Margaret of Connaught. (More on its history here!)

For this year’s Nobels, Victoria paired the tiara with diamond floral jewelry from the grand Braganza Parure. (More on the suite here!) Here’s a look at the earrings…

… and the diamond floral brooch (more here!), which she used to secure the sash of the Order of the Seraphim.

Victoria also wore a tangle of delicate bracelets on her left wrist and a pair of tennis-style bracelets on her right wrist.

Victoria used her jewels to accessorize this grand Nina Ricci gown, which she borrowed from her mother’s collection.

Here’s a view of the dramatic back detail of the gown (and the small diamond brooch Victoria used to secure her sash). This is the dress’s second trip to the Nobels. Queen Silvia wore it for the ceremony and banquet back in 1995, pairing it with the same tiara (Queen Sofia’s Tiara) that she wore this year for the festivities.

In a break from the pattern she’s used over the course of the past decade, Silvia repeated the same tiara she wore for last year’s Nobel ceremony and banquet: Queen Sofia’s Tiara. (You can see how she styled it last year here!)

The grand tiara dates to the nineteenth century, and as its name suggests, it belonged to Queen Sofia of Sweden and Norway. You can see close-up views — and read my interpretation of the tiara’s design — in this post!

With the diamond tiara, Silvia wore more heirloom diamonds on her ears: the Vasa Diamond Earrings. (You can read my article on these magnificent earrings over here!)

Silvia also wore the sash and star of the highest Swedish order of chivalry, the Order of the Seraphim, and her husband’s Royal Family Order, which sits in a diamond frame on a blue silk ribbon. Note that the portrait features King Carl XVI Gustaf as he looked around the time of the couple’s wedding in 1976.
