State Opening of Parliament Jewels 2017

This morning, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom attended a scaled-back version of the State Opening of Parliament, where she delivered the Queen’s speech in a hat and coat rather than her usual crown and robes.

The Queen was accompanied to the event by her eldest son, the Prince of Wales. The Duke of Edinburgh, who usually attends with her, has been hospitalized on a precaution while dealing with an infection. (Buckingham Palace has assured everyone that there’s no need for alarm.) With Philip’s impending retirement, I’d imagine we’ll be seeing Charles play this role in the future, too.

Because the State Opening had to be rescheduled as a result of the recent elections, the Queen did not wear the grand trappings of state to deliver her speech, but the Imperial State Crown was still present at the event. (I don’t want to jinx anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the model for the State Opening for the rest of QEII’s reign. I hope I’m wrong about that, but wearing a crown and robes would be difficult for most of us, let alone a woman who is over ninety.)

The Queen did wear her usual daytime jewel combo: pearl and diamond earrings, pearl necklace, and brooch. Congrats to everyone who guessed the Cullinan V Brooch in our earlier poll!

After the speech, the Queen and Prince Charles zipped off to Royal Ascot. Look for our coverage of the races later this afternoon!
Royal Ascot 2017 Jewels (Day One)

And we’re off! The races have begun at the 2017 Royal Ascot meet, and the royals were there wearing their best racing finery. Here’s a look at the jewels we saw on both the royal ladies and gentlemen today.

With a lime green coat and hat, the Queen chose to wear a brooch we’ve seen a lot from her lately: the Peranakan-style Birds of Paradise Brooch. Once again, the brooch proves very difficult to photograph in daylight!
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
HM most recently wore this brooch at another major racing event: the Epsom Derby. You can read more about the brooch here; it was a Diamond Jubilee gift from Singapore.

One of the best things about morning dress for gentlemen? Tie pins! The Duke of Edinburgh secured his tie with one of his favorite anchor-shaped pins — perfect for someone who served heroically in the navy.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore white for the first day of this year’s races, accessorizing with her five-stranded pearl necklace with the large diamond and pink topaz cluster clasp, plus diamond and pearl earrings.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
The Prince of Wales wore a tie pin that we’ve seen him wear before; intriguingly, it features the cypher of Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Here’s a look at Charles and Camilla’s complete ensembles. Charles appears to be wearing a pocket watch chain on his vest, and you can see delicate bracelets on Camilla’s left wrist.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Like her Camilla, the Duchess of Cambridge also selected a white ensemble for the event. She chose the Bahrain Pearl Earrings to coordinate with her hat and lace dress.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
The earrings are on long-term loan from the Queen. They were made using pearls given to HM as a wedding present by Bahrain in 1947.

In this closer-up, you get a good view of the distinctive baguette diamonds in the earrings.

Kate’s dress was made by one of her favorite designers, Alexander McQueen.

Like his father, the Duke of Cambridge wears a tie pin featuring a royal cypher, but it’s tough to make out the monogram. I think either George V or George VI? (Please advise in the comments if you know.)

The Countess of Wessex paired a carved jade pendant necklace with silver and orange-toned earrings for the first day of the races.

The jewels coordinated with her elegant green dress, made by Emilia Wickstead.

The Earl of Wessex also wore a tie pin with a gem-set royal cypher, but photo angles made it impossible to discern the monogram.

No surprises here — no major jewelry for Princess Beatrice of York, though her outfit was heavily embroidered.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Her sister, Princess Eugenie of York, wore extremely minimal jewelry with her black-and-white ensemble.

Here’s a look at the delicate bracelets (one with an “E” charm) and rings worn by Eugenie today.

And here’s a better look at the complete outfits worn by both princesses.

None of the photos I have of the Duke of York allow us to adequately assess his tie pin situation, sadly. (He’s hidden behind Camilla here.)
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
The Princess Royal didn’t ride in the carriage procession, so it was a little difficult to spot her in the crowd, but here she is, wearing pearls!
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Zara Tindall wore fairly simple earrings from her own jewelry line (which you can read about over here) with an imposing blue and white chapeau.

Mike Tindall wore a tie pin that is (I believe) in the shape of a steering wheel, which is, well, an interesting choice.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Princess Anne’s daughter-in-law, Autumn Phillips, wore sparkling diamond stud earrings for the occasion.
Chris Jackson/Getty Images |
Here’s a look at her entire blue-and-white ensemble. Peter Phillips went sans tie pin for the day.

Also in attendance on Day 1: Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Marie-Christine likes big, statement-making pieces of jewelry, like this double-stranded pearl necklace and coordinating, oversized pearl button earrings.

Prince Michael’s tie pin appears to be set with a dark blue cabochon gemstone.

And here’s a better look at both of the Michaels. I spy a large cocktail ring on Marie-Christine’s right hand.
