1. The Norwegian royal family hosted a reception full of tiaras on Thursday evening, and they get my collective top vote of the week. Queen Sonja wore the grandest of her jewelry sets, the family’s emeralds, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the family’s amethyst parure. (Read about the emeralds here and the amethysts here!)

Jewels of the Princess of Asturias Awards

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofia of Spain traveled to Oviedo this weekend for the Princess of Asturias Awards, a collection of prizes awarded annually to those who have made notable achievements in several areas, including arts, humanities, sciences, and sports.

This year’s festivities began on Thursday with a concert at the Principe Felipe Auditorium.

Letizia wore some of her most glamorous jewelry for the concert, including both of the diamond bracelets from the joyas de pasar collection. (More on that over here!)

She also wore her Yanes blue topaz girandole earrings, which have been in her collection for years. (I incorrectly identified the gemstone in these earrings in an earlier post — they’re reportedly blue topaz, not aquamarine.)

And, on her right hand, she wore a large ring. This has been one of her go-to pieces lately, appearing multiple times in the past few weeks. Those of you who read the blog regularly will flag that as an unusual choice on Letizia’s part, as she is rarely ever photographed wearing a ring (not even her wedding or engagement rings). I don’t believe we know the source of this one.

Day two of the awards celebrations began at the Reconquista Hotel on Friday, where Felipe and Letizia delivered medals.

The new ring made a second appearance as well. At some point during this event, she switched the ring from her right to her left hand, perhaps for comfort while shaking hands.

Queen Sofia also attended the afternoon ceremony on Friday. As usual, she piled on the jewels: floral earrings, layered necklaces and bracelets, and a trio of pins, two of which are small bejeweled insects.

On Friday evening, Felipe, Letizia, and Sofia arrived at the Campoamor Theater for the official awards ceremony.

She also wore her new ring — this time on the index finger of her left hand — and her diamond Cartier bracelet, worn (as usual) on her forearm.

Pardon the obscured monarch here, but this is the most detailed photo I was able to present of Queen Sofia’s jewels, which included a multicolored pearl necklace with a metallic central piece, plus a golden brooch and pearl earrings.

On Saturday, Felipe and Letizia wrapped up this year’s awards festivities with a visit to Poreñu, which was named as Asturias’s exemplary town of the year.

Fittingly for an outdoor engagement, Letizia wore the same small Elena C butterfly stud earrings that she wore for this year’s Easter Sunday mass.
