The results are in from this week’s tiara votes!

This match-up, which paired two major Danish royal heirlooms, was a close one! Although the Danish Emerald Parure Tiara brought in 45.4% of your votes, the Danish Ruby Parure Tiara was victorious with 54.6% of the vote.

This one was another squeaker! The Danish Floral Aigrette triumphed with 53.66% of the vote, while 46.34% of you chose the Pearl Poire Tiara.

This contest was a rather unexpected blowout! Though Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara was selected by 18.92% of you, Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara won the day with a stunning 81.08% of the vote!

Our second Norwegian tiara contest wasn’t close, either! The Norwegian Emerald Parure Tiara brought in 81.37% of the vote, defeating one of our Tournament Cinderellas, the Vasa Tiara, which was chosen by 18.63% of voters.
The Swedish and Wild Card rounds of the Sparkling Sixteen begin tomorrow morning!

Our final contest of the week features two Norwegian heirlooms!

This small but dazzling diamond tiara was a wedding gift from the city of Stockholm to Princess Martha of Sweden on her marriage to the future King Olav V of Norway in 1929. The tiara’s name comes from Martha’s royal heritage from the old Vasa dynasty of Sweden. The tiara was subsequently worn by both of the current king’s sisters. It belongs to Princess Astrid, who has indicated that it will remain with the royal family after her eventual death — hopefully a very long time from now!

The most historic set of jewelry in the Norwegian vaults, this diamond and emerald parure has its roots in the earliest part of the nineteenth century. They were handed down from Princess Augusta, Duchess of Leuchtenberg, to her daughter, Empress Amelie of Brazil. She in turn bequeathed the set to her sister, Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway, who left them to her daughter-in-law, Queen Sofia of Sweden. In 1931, Sofia passed the emeralds down to her own daughter-in-law, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden. She gave them to her daughter, Crown Princess Martha of Norway, to use as an insurance policy during her World War II exile. Happily, the family survived the war, and the emeralds remain with the main branch today, worn exuberantly by Queen Sonja.

Two Scandinavian matriarchs face off in this dazzling contest!

Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara vs. Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara

One of the grandest and most intricate tiaras in the Norwegian royal vaults, this early nineteenth-century sparkler first belonged to Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway, a granddaughter of Empress Josephine. The tiara took an interesting path to Norway: Queen Josefina left it to her granddaughter, Queen Lovisa of Denmark, who willed it to her son, Prince Gustav. In turn, he bequeathed the tiara to his niece, Crown Princess Martha of Norway. Today, it is worn exclusively by Queen Sonja.

The original version of this convertible diamond and pearl tiara was given to Queen Maud by her parents, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, when she married the future King Haakon VII of Norway in 1896. The tiara stayed with the family for almost a century, but in 1995, it was stolen after it was sent to Garrard’s in London to be cleaned and never recovered. An exact replica was made, and that piece is now worn by Queen Sonja, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and Princess Martha Louise.
