4. The Pascua Militar ceremony was held at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Saturday, and Queen Letizia of Spain wore her Bulgari aquamarine and diamond earrings.

3. On January 10, the Japanese imperial family attended the annual New Year’s Lectures at the palace in Tokyo, and Empress Michiko wore pearls with a floral brooch.

2. For Saturday’s Pascua Militar ceremony, Queen Sofia wore pearls with the diamond and ruby pendant she inherited from her mother, Queen Friederike of Greece.
1. My top vote of the week goes to a beautiful brooch worn by a slowly-reappearing princess. The senior Japanese princesses wore lovely daytime jewels to the New Year’s Lectures. Crown Princess Masako, who attended for the first time in more than a decade (!), wore sparkling earrings and her elaborate diamond scroll brooch. Also: Princess Kiko wore pearls with a gold-toned brooch, and Princess Mako wore pearls with the twisted ribbon brooch she wore in Paraguay in 2016.

Another jewel dusted off from the royal vaults comes in at number 9 in our countdown of the best royal jewel moments of the year…
#9: The Ruby Peacock Necklace

The parure of ruby and diamond jewels was made for Queen Wilhelmina in 1897. Her daughter, Queen Juliana, famously wore the necklace at her investiture in 1948 (pictured above). For years, the set was worn by Juliana’s second daughter, Princess Irene, and then the necklace disappeared from public view for about half a century.

Queen Maxima had previously worn the tiara from the Ruby Peacock Parure, but the necklace didn’t come out of the vaults until February, when she wore it in The Hague for a dinner with the President of Germany. The appearance is just the latest in a series of jewelry rediscoveries by Maxima, who has proved herself one of the most innovative jewel-wearing royals today.

5. Princess Firyal, the former wife of Prince Muhammad bin Talal of Jordan, sparkled in major earrings at the Berggruen Prize Gala at the New York Public Library on Friday; not sure whether the sparkle on her dress is a brooch or an embellishment, but I’m enjoying it either way.

4. In the Wales/Cornwall Christmas card this year, the Duchess of Cornwall wears her diamond floral suite; the photograph was taken at her private 70th birthday dinner, held at Highgrove in July.

3. On Wednesday, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wore the slim diamond earrings from the Brazilian Parure and one of the family’s diamond bow brooches for the annual meeting of the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.
