King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway both turn 80 this year, so they decided to combine their celebrations into one super-sized bash this weekend in Oslo. Tonight, things got very sparkly at a white-tie birthday dinner. Here’s the first of two posts focusing on the glittering tiaras worn this evening!

Queen Sonja wore pieces from the grandest parure in the Norwegian vaults: the family’s emerald set. Unfortunately, the green in these jewels isn’t super pleasant with the bright red sash of the Order of St. Olav or the red ribbon of King Harald’s family order.

But the emeralds themselves are exquisite. Sonja wore the tiara, earrings, necklace, and brooch from the parure.

Unfortunately, the acid-green hue of Sonja’s dress didn’t work with either the emeralds or the order sash, in my opinion.

The emeralds were a slam-dunk guess for tonight’s dinner, but we got a big tiara surprise from Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. She wore Queen Maud’s Vifte Tiara as a diadem for the first time, pairing it with her interchangeable drop earrings, this time hung with pearls.

Mette-Marit has worn the Vifte Tiara in public only once before: at her pre-wedding gala, when she wore it as a necklace. This time, she placed the teeny tiara in the back of her hair, creating a halo-like effect from the front.

Mette-Marit wore both the sash of the Order of St. Olav and King Harald’s family order with her gown. She was escorted into the dinner by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Princess Martha Louise of Norway wore a mish-mash of jewels from her personal collection. Her tiara, King Olav’s Gift Tiara, was an 18th birthday gift from her grandfather. She paired it with dramatic dimaond hoop earrings, a diamond brooch, and the lovely necklace she wore at the wedding of Princess Madeleine of Sweden. The recently-separated princess also wore a major cluster ring on her left hand.

Martha Louise, who was escorted by King Philippe of Belgium (her second cousin), wore the sash of the Order of St. Olav and her father’s family order.

King Harald’s sister, Princess Astrid, wore her grandest suite of jewelry: the diamond and turquoise parure that once belonged to Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. She secured her order sash with a diamond and pearl bow brooch.

Her star-spangled gown was festooned with the sash of the Order of St. Olav and the family orders of King Haakon VII (her grandfather), King Olav V (her father), and King Harald V (her brother). She was escorted by a smiling Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark.

From Norway’s neighboring nation, Queen Silvia of Sweden wore the tiara, earrings, and brooch from the grand Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure. (The sapphires were once a part of the same royal jewel collection as Queen Sonja’s emeralds.)

Silvia, who was escorted by the President of Finland, wore the sash of the Order of St. Olav and the family order of her husband, King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wore one of her favorite tiaras: the Baden Fringe. She paired it with the family’s diamond epaulette earrings and the diamond lozenge brooch from the family vault. She also wore the sash of the Order of St. Olav and her father’s family order.

Princess Sofia of Sweden was resplendent in the family’s tall Diamond Six-Button Tiara. She paired the diadem with the diamond earrings from Queen Josefina’s stomacher (also worn on her wedding day) and a small, round diamond brooch.

Sofia, escorted by Bernhard Mach, doesn’t have a Norwegian order, so she wore the sash of her highest Swedish order, the Order of the Seraphim. She also wore her father-in-law’s family order.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark made a splash in major diamonds at the birthday dinner, wearing the flexible Danish Floral Aigrette.

Denmark was also represented at this dinner by Crown Princess Mary. She wore her convertible Edwardian Tiara with the new earrings recently created to match the piece. She also secured her sash with her small round diamond brooch.
