The Top Ten: Camilla’s Gala Jewels

Happy 70th Birthday to the Duchess of Cornwall! To mark the occasion, I’ve ranked ten of my favorite gala jewels, both individual pieces and sets, from Camilla’s jewelry box. Let us know your top ten list in the comments below!

10. The Diamond Serpent Necklace: Packed with round and square-cut diamonds, this classic diamond necklace is said to have been presented to Camilla by her now-husband, the Prince of Wales, in the years before their wedding. She’s been wearing it in public since at least 2001.

9. The Pink Topaz Demi-Parure: Also said to have been gifts from the Prince of Wales, the pink topaz and diamond clasp of this five-stranded pearl necklace, as well as a pair of coordinating diamond and pink topaz earrings, date to the 1830s. Camilla has had the suite of jewels for at least a decade, and she wears the pieces for both day and evening engagements.

8. The Cubitt Tiara: An heirloom piece of jewelry from Camilla’s family, this diamond floral tiara belonged to her grandmother, Sonia Keppel Cubitt. It’s been a wedding tiara for more than one member of the family, and now Camilla wears it occasionally for white-tie events. (Read more about the tiara over here!)

7. The Queen Mother’s Amethyst Heart Necklace: This delicate amethyst and pearl necklace, which features a distinctive heart-shaped pendant, was Queen Alexandra’s wedding gift to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (better known to us as the Queen Mother) in 1923. On at least one occasion, Camilla has paired the striking necklace with her oval-shaped amethyst earrings.

6. The Saudi Emerald Suite: Camilla has received several suites of jewelry during visits to the Middle East, but the most modern and wearable of them all is this emerald set. The suite includes a necklace, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings.

5. The Turquoise Demi-Parure: Another suite of jewels that Camilla inherited through her own family connections, this distinctive set of turquoise and diamond jewels includes an elaborate necklace and a coordinating pair of earrings. She’s been wearing the demi-parure in public for almost two decades.

4. The Aquamarine and Diamond Suite: Another demi-parure from Camilla’s collection, this set features pale blue aquamarines and diamonds. The suite includes a necklace with a large pendant, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings.

3. The Diamond Demi-Parure: One of Camilla’s most-worn sets of gala jewelry is this demi-parure made of various sizes of pear-shaped diamonds. The suite, which includes a necklace and a large pair of earrings, is easy to coordinate with other pieces from her jewelry box.

2. The Greville Festoon Necklace: Five magnificent strands of diamonds make up this elaborate necklace from Cartier, which was a part of Mrs. Greville’s famous jewelry bequest to the Queen Mother. The piece can be worn in a smaller setting, with just three strands of diamonds, but so far Camilla has only worn it with all five strands of sparkling diamonds.

1. The Greville Tiara: Another piece from the Greville bequest, this tiara was a favorite of the late Queen Mother, and now it’s a favorite of the Duchess of Cornwall. Originally made by Boucheron in 1921, the tiara has a distinctive honeycomb design; it was later altered by Cartier for the Queen Mother. The Queen inherited it in 2002, and she gave it to Camilla as a long-term loan shortly after her wedding. (Read more about the tiara over here!)

Crown Princess Victoria’s Bejeweled 40th Birthday

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden turned 40 on Friday, and the royal family celebrated the milestone with a special Te Deum service. Here’s a look at the elegant jewels they wore.

Victoria attended the service with her entire family: Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle, and Prince Oscar.

Because her dress was decorated with delicate butterflies, Victoria sensibly kept her jewelry and accessories to a minimum. She wore a pair of sparkling diamond stud earrings…

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia were, of course, on hand to celebrate their eldest daughter’s big birthday.

Silvia wore some of the most important pearls in her jewelry box: the double-stranded pearl necklace that belonged to her husband’s mother, Princess Sibylla. She also wore pearl earrings, a pearl bracelet, and an insect brooch.

Prince Carl Philip attended the service with his wife, Princess Sofia (who is expecting their second child), and their son, Prince Alexander.

It was clearly more challenging to get a good portrait of Princess Madeleine’s active family. She attended the birthday service with her husband, Chris O’Neill, and their two children, Princess Leonore and Prince Nicolas.

Like her sister-in-law, Madeleine also wore baroque pearl drop earrings. This pair, which she’s worn previously, features a modern diamond setting.

Three of the king’s sisters — Princess Christina, Princess Birgitta, and Princess Desiree — attended the service with Christina’s husband, Tord Magnuson.

Princess Birgitta went for a bit of sparkle, wearing glittering pear-shaped drop earrings, a diamond floral brooch, and a diamond cross.

It was especially wonderful to see Princess Christina, who has been in treatment for cancer, attending the service. Like Desiree, she wore pearls, including one strand with a silvery-gray hue.

Christina’s son, Oscar Magnuson, attended the service with his wife, Emma, and their two sons, Albert and Henri.

And there was one more Bernadotte who posed for the photographers: Marianne Bernadotte, widow of Sigvard Bernadotte (and therefore an aunt by marriage of the king). She wore an interesting suite of pearl and silver-toned modern jewels.

Trooping the Colour Jewels 2017

It’s time again for the Queen’s very merry unbirthday party, everyone! For the sovereign’s official birthday parade and the Trooping the Colour exercises at Horseguards Parade, we’ve got plenty of jewels on display.

The Queen rode with the Duke of Edinburgh in a carriage in the parade down the Mall. Another sign of Prince Philip’s retirement (and the need for a greater level of comfort at his age): he’s swapped out the heavy, hot military dress uniform, with its enormous bearskin, for morning dress. The Duke of Kent also wore morning dress this year.

The Queen wore the same brooch that she’s worn at nearly every Trooping the Colour: the Guards Brooch. (Read more about the piece over here!) The coat and hat are recent repeats, worn at a Buckingham Palace garden party less than a month ago.

In the next carriage: the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry. Camilla wore her usual diamond and pearl earrings with her diamond-encrusted clover brooches.

For the annual balcony appearance during the military flypast, the main line of the royals gathered together toward the middle, with the other branches of the family on either side. Peter and Autumn Phillips attended with their daughters, Savannah and Isla. Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were there with their daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, their son, Lord Frederick Windsor, and his wife, the actress Sophie Winkleman. The Duke of Kent’s family was in attendance as well, including Lady Helen Taylor’s children. Princess Alexandra’s family was there, too. (If/when I have a picture of the fuller balcony that I can share with you, I’ll add it to the post! I’ve seen images — so no need to send or link any — but I don’t have any yet that I have the rights to use.)

But, of course, two of the littlest Windsors, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were the stars of the balcony appearance — even though George was less than impressed with the show!
