Today, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway marks her 45th birthday, and we’re celebrating by taking a look at ten of the most glittering and fabulous royal jewels she’s worn since joining Norway’s royal family in 2001. Chime in with your own top ten list in the comments below!

10. The Engagement Ring: Crown Prince Haakon presented Mette-Marit with an especially sentimental royal ring when he proposed — it’s been worn by three generations of Norwegian royal women. King Olav V gave the ring to Princess Martha of Sweden when they were engaged in 1929, and their son (and Haakon’s father), King Harald V, gave it to Sonja Haraldsen (Haakon’s mother) in 1968. The yellow gold ring is set with diamonds and rubies.

9. The Convertible Diamond Earrings: For gala events, Mette-Marit often reaches for this versatile pair of earrings, which feature a diamond pendant that can be worn at various lengths and with different pendants. Above, a red faceted gemstone pendant is attached to the earrings, but Mette-Marit also frequently wears the earrings with pearls.

8. The Wedding Gift Pearls: Crown Prince Haakon reportedly presented Mette-Marit with this suite of classic pearls as a wedding gift; the set also includes a bracelet.

7. The Amethyst Suite: Mette-Marit is now the primary wearer of the family’s amethyst and diamond demi-parure, which features a necklace that can be worn as a tiara. The set was originally a gift from King Harald to Queen Sonja.

6. The Floral Statement Earrings: This pair of sparkling earrings, one of the largest and most complicated in Mette-Marit’s jewelry box, are designed with an embellished floral motif.

5. The Diamond Daisy Bandeau: Mette-Marit’s wedding tiara, a sparkling Edwardian bandeau featuring dainty daisies, was a gift from her parents-in-law, King Harald and Queen Sonja.

4. The Aquamarine Brooch: This classic brooch features a rectangular sea-green aquamarine surrounded by a delicate frame of scrolling diamonds.

3. The Vifte Tiara: Mette-Marit has worn this delicate, fan-shaped diadem, which was one of Queen Maud’s wedding gifts, as both a necklace and a tiara.

2. Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara and Drapers’ Company Brooch: This pair of jewels linked to Queen Maud, including a diamond and pearl brooch from among her wedding gifts and a replica of her diamond and pearl tiara, were worn by Mette-Marit for the grand Swedish royal wedding in 2010.

1. The Silver Wedding Earrings: This remarkable pair of diamond earrings, which were a silver wedding anniversary gift from King Olav V to Crown Princess Martha, were given to Mette-Marit by King Harald and Queen Sonja as a wedding present. Poignantly, Martha was never able to wear the earrings in public, as she died a month after her silver anniversary, but they have become some of Mette-Marit’s favorite jewels.

Princess Anne’s Modern Pearl Earrings

The Princess Royal celebrates her birthday today, and in her honor, we’re spending our morning with pieces from her jewelry box that have stood the test of time: her modern pearl, gold, and diamond earrings.

Anne’s been wearing the earrings for virtually her entire adult life. That’s not particularly surprising — Anne is a woman who invests in things she likes and keeps them — but it’s notable that the earrings have managed to remain visually current and interesting for their entire tenure in her jewelry box.

Here’s a closer look at the earrings, which are essentially a deconstructed cluster stud earring. Instead of circling the central pearl in a neat halo, the gold and diamonds of the setting are stretched and scattered. The shape of each earring is particularly interesting — sometimes I think I can see a leaf shape in the design.

Here’s another view. The earrings were made by Andrew Grima, who was one of the family’s favorite jewelers in the 1960s and 1970s. They’re similar in shape, materials, and construction to another piece in Anne’s collection: her stalactite brooch (which appears later in this post).

The earrings accompanied Anne on an early royal tour. She was only 19 when she wore them in Australia with her mother. Here, she pairs them with a floral brooch for a day at the races in Sydney.

In 1971, Anne paired the earrings with another gold, pearl, and diamond jewel, her floral brooch, as she christened a ship alongside her great-uncle, Lord Mountbatten.

The earrings have remained in Anne’s frequent jewelry rotation throughout her life, and they’ve made appearances at some very important personal events. In 1992, she wore them for her wedding to Timothy Laurence in Scotland. They recently celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

In 2011, she chose them for the wedding of her daughter, the accomplished equestrienne Zara Phillips, to rugby player Mike Tindall in Edinburgh.

The earrings also made a notable appearance recently at the royal wedding of the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

And they haven’t just shown up for weddings: in 2016, Anne wore the earrings for the official national celebrations of her mother’s 90th birthday.

But even though they’ve been worn often for personal events, Anne has also chosen them for official engagements. In 1999, they made an appearance at the start of the Chinese state visit to London.

And they also often pop up at one of Anne’s favorite events of the year: Royal Ascot! Here, in 2003, Anne wears them again with her gold, pearl, and diamond floral brooch.

The same combination was chosen for Ladies’ Day six years later — you can just see the floral brooch peeking up over the top of the carriage during the procession.

In 2017, Anne wore the earrings with a vibrant green ensemble, a lovely pairing for the gold.
