Our countdown of the best royal jewels of the year has arrived at number five: the sparkle provided by the Danish royal family on New Year’s Day in 2020!

In most years—though not in 2021—the Danish royal family gathers on New Year’s Day for the first of a series of diplomatic receptions (or “levees”) in Copenhagen. Several of these are held in the span of the first week of the year, but the grandest and most glittering is the banquet held on January 1. In 2020, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark sparkled in the Danish Emerald Parure for the event, a set of jewelry that makes up part of the nation’s crown jewel collection.

Crown Princess Mary dazzled in her grandest parure for the occasion: the Danish Ruby Parure, which has a long and storied Scandinavian history.

Princess Marie of Denmark wore her most important tiara, Princess Dagmar’s Floral Tiara, for the banquet. It’s the same tiara she wore on her wedding day in 2008.

And in 2020, we had another surprise royal guest: Princess Benedikte, who was elegant in Queen Sofia’s Star and Pearl Tiara for the occasion.
