Jewels of Royal Ascot: 1950s and 1960s

This time of year, we should be right in the midst of Royal June — that whirl of British royal events including Trooping the Colour, Garter Day, and Royal Ascot. To tide us over until next year, we’ve got a flashback to Royal Ascot meets past this week, including lots of royal jewelry! Today, we’re starting with a look at royal appearances from the 1950s and 1960s.

1951: Princess Elizabeth, wearing the Flower Basket Brooch, in the royal box with Princess Margaret … and, to the right of the photo, Group Captain Peter Townsend

1952: The Queen, wearing the Dorset Bow Brooch, watches the races with the Duke of Edinburgh

1952: Princess Margaret arrives for the races wearing one of her Maltese Cross brooches

1953: The Queen, wearing the Sapphire Chrysanthemum Brooch, travels to the races with the Duke of Edinburgh

1956: The Begum Aga Khan wears pearls as she arrives for a day at the races

1958: A year after her husband’s death, the Begum Aga Khan departs for Royal Ascot once again, wearing a triple strand of pearls and pearl drop earrings

1963: The Queen, wearing Prince Albert’s Brooch (vertically!), leaves the Royal Enclosure

1963: The Queen, wearing the Dorset Bow Brooch, and the Queen Mother, wearing her emerald brooch, arrive at the races

1965: The Queen, wearing the Cambridge Emerald Scroll Brooch, rides in the carriage procession with the Duke of Edinburgh

1965: The Queen Mother, wearing her emerald brooch, rides in the carriage procession with Princess Margaret, who appears to be wearing her rectangular aquamarine brooch

1966: Princess Grace of Monaco wears clip-on pearl earrings as she arrives for the races

1966: Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (wearing pearls and a daisy brooch with pearl pendant) rides in the carriage procession with Princess Benedikte of Denmark, who also wears pearls

1967: The Queen, wearing the Cartier sapphire and diamond bracelet give to her by her parents on her 18th birthday, rides in the carriage procession beside the Duke of Edinburgh

1967: The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, both wearing pearls, ride in the carriage procession

1969: The Queen, whose jewels are covered by her raincoat, rides in a rainy carriage procession beside the Duke of Edinburgh
