The runner-up spot for the best tiara moment at Crown Princess Victoria’s royal wedding goes to … the mother of the bride, Queen Silvia!

Queen Silvia reached for some of the grandest and most important royal jewels in the Bernadotte vaults for the wedding of the nation’s future monarch — who also happens to be her elder daughter.

She paired the grand Braganza Tiara with jewels from the Russian Pink Topaz Suite.

The occasion gave us some excellent views of these historic jewels. Here’s a closer look at the Braganza Tiara, which came to Sweden through an inheritance from a former Empress of Brazil.

And here’s a great view of the necklace from the pink topaz suite, which was a gift from Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia (wife of Tsar Paul I) to her daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, in honor of the birth of Maria Pavlovna’s daughter, Augusta. (The provenance was confirmed in the recent Swedish royal jewelry documentary.) Fittingly, the topazes in the suite also come from Brazil. Remember that Silvia’s mother, Alice Soares de Toledo, was Brazilian, too!

June 19, 2010 also happened to be King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s own wedding anniversary. Today, they’re celebrating 44 years of marriage. You can look back at their own royal wedding in our Jewels in Motion post on the day!

The king honored his wife and their 34th wedding anniversary during the wedding speeches, which were some of the loveliest in recent memory.
Here’s a clip of his speech. He thanks Silvia for her love and support, and then presents her with a single rose. Such a romantic day all around!
